Legally Blind on Paper — a Firearms Specialist and School Guardian in Real Life
Smith told the VA his vision prevented him from driving or working, and collected more than $240,000 in disability benefits from 2017 to 2021 — while working as a firearms specialist and school guardian who could drive and read.
According to his plea agreement, Jerry Smith falsely represented to the VA that he was legally blind and that his condition prevented him from driving, working, and performing various daily functions.
As a result, from 2017 through 2021 he received more than $240,000 in VA disability compensation and benefits. In reality, his vision was significantly better than he had represented to the VA.
During the same period he worked as a firearms specialist and school guardian and could drive, read, and navigate obstacles in stores. The VA OIG investigated the case.
