The Lone-Survivor Story Was Invented: 16 Months for Stolen Valor
Bass claimed to be a Marine combat veteran who alone survived a 2010 Afghanistan ambush — a story that raised donations and even landed her a newspaper profile. She never served. 16 months in federal prison.
Amanda Kate Walker Bass claimed to be a multiple-time deployed Marine Corps combat veteran who was the lone survivor of an enemy ambush in Afghanistan in 2010 that left her seriously wounded.
She used the fictitious narrative for financial gain, having a GoFundMe page set up for her benefit and sharing the story to obtain donations, free labor, and other benefits. In July 2021 she induced The Daily Memphian to publish an article about her titled 'Disabled, legally blind veteran now dealer of luxury goods.'
Bass never served in the armed forces. She pleaded guilty on February 5, 2026 to wire fraud and fraudulent use of military medals. The case was investigated by the FBI and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
"We are pleased to impose a real consequence on this faker and thief."
