$671,000 in Bribes to the VA Engineer Who Steered the Work
A contractor paid a VA supervisory engineer $671K in bribes; he steered $6M in VA construction projects to her companies — including one falsely claimed as disabled-veteran-owned. Both went to prison.
From 2007 to July 2012, Doremus paid Machinga roughly $671,000 in bribes. In return, the VA supervisory engineer at East Orange used his authority to steer VA construction contracts to her three companies.
They also conspired to falsely represent that Tyro General Construction was owned and controlled by a service-disabled veteran. Tyro was paid more than $3 million on the falsely obtained contract.
Doremus deducted the bribe payments and personal spending as business expenses, underpaying her federal taxes by $250,374. Both pleaded guilty. VA OIG, the FBI and IRS-Criminal Investigation investigated.
"Machinga directed more than $6 million of VA construction projects to Doremus’ companies."
